Welcome Fr. Tormey

Posted by: tony on 09/13/2009 06:22 PM (Read: )
Fr James TormeyToday we welcome our newest pastor, Fr. James Tormey. Let's give him a warm welcome, and do our best to help him have the smoothest transition that he's experienced thus far.

Our Mass schedule (as listed in the sidebar) will be changing. Next week it will be the same, but the week after, it will alter to fit better with Fr. Tormey's many commitments (and the limitations of time and space).

I am also in the process of changing web software, so this website will have a different look and feel to it. I have not been able to find a web presence for St. Vincent, and I would like to include our sister parish in a combined website were we all can be aware of each other's goings-on. I will try and get in contact with someone at St. Vincent's to make this happen. I can always be contacted at tony (at) bsacjc (dot) org.

New Format For Bulletins

Posted by: tony on 09/14/2007 11:27 PM (Read: )
Due to issues we've been having with timely deliver and uploading of the bulletins to our web site, we have decided to offer the bulletins in Microsoft Word® format.

Microsoft Office® seems to be the most popular office programs in use today, but I do understand that some might not have purchased Microsoft Office, but may have some other type of office software such as Works.

Microsoft offers a free viewer for those who do not have the software package installed. This software is available here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en

A link to this site will also be made available on the bulletin download page.

Problem with Bulletins and Homilies.

Posted by: tony on 03/29/2007 09:23 PM (Read: )
We had been having problems receiving our bulletins, and after contacting the bulletin company (who was bought out by a bigger bulletin company) I believe we have a mechanism in place to more consistently receive (and upload) our bulletins.

I didn't realize we had a problem with the recorder in the audio closet until I went back two weeks to cut the homilies to place them on the website. Last week I placed the recorder directly in the ambo, and the recording is reasonable (not as good as recording off of the mic, but not too bad for the time being). I'm still going to be looking into getting that the recording operational one way or the other.

I apologize for any inconvenience for those who enjoy Fr. Bourgeois' homilies online. For those living locally, there is another way to hear Father's homilies every week. Attend Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church.

Fr. Bourgeois' Letter to the Bishop Regarding Reconfiguration

Posted by: tony on 12/17/2006 02:02 PM (Read: )
Our PCA (Pastoral Care Area) decided that the pastors of each of the parishes affected by our cluster would send a letter to Bishop Moynihan regarding their individual recommendations.

That letter is reproduced here:
Church of the Blessed Sacrament
Cenacle Plaza, Johnson City, New York 13790
Telephone: (607) 797-5151

Dear Bishop Moynihan,

We at Blessed Sacrament Church in Johnson City do not believe the people or the diocese are best served by the closure of Blessed Sacrament as presented by the first four preferred options created at
our meetings. Our reasons follow.

First, we believe that the reconfiguration process should consider the distribution of churches and people throughout the entire Triple Cities: Binghamton's population of 45.5k is served by ten churches (Sts. Andrew, Mary, John, Thomas, Patrick, Cyril & Methodius, Catherine, Paul and Holy Trinity) while Johnson City's population of 15k is served by only two churches (St. James and Blessed Sacrament) and Endicott's 12.6k people are served by five (Sts. Ambrose, Casimir, Joseph, Anthony and Our Lady of Good Counsel). St. James is, by its own description, at virtual capacity. Would Broome County be best served by reconfiguring in Johnson City or elsewhere?

Secondly, the Diocese and Blessed Sacrament Church are still now in the process of restoring the more than $1 million damage caused by the June 28 flood. Closing the parish before the paint has had time to dry would hardly seem like a good stewardship practice on part of the Diocese.

Thirdly, if Blessed Sacrament must be involved in reconfiguration, we would recommend the continuation of a dialogue with St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Vestal since Blessed Sacrament's second largest block of registered parishioners are from Vestal. Additionally, a merger or sharing of services with St. Thomas Aquinas might also be considered since for the past two years the Confirmation programs have shared activities and that has proved very favorable.

In Blessed Sacrament's 60 year history, the parishioners have consistently been the highest per capita givers in Broome County and have always been faithful to their parish. Many original founding members are still here worshipping and faithfully serving the community, the Diocese and the Universal Church.

In retrospect, after hearing from other PCA's, I am saddened to see that, by comparison, we seem to have approached our charge from a strictly arithmetical point of view: how to reduce the number of priests by 50%. Other pastors I have spoken to seem to have given the situation a more theological, spiritual and pastoral perspective. We continue to pray diligently for vocations and trust that God will indeed hear our prayers.

Respectfully,

Rev. Donald Bourgeois, pastor

Flood Update

Posted by: tony on 06/30/2006 03:34 PM (Read: )
Mass will continue this weekend on the normal schedule. If you come to Mass, please be careful of debris in the parking lot and sidewalks. Due to flooding there is no electricity, and Father Don is temporarily living with the Makers'.

If you have an emergency and need to contact Father Don, please call Helen Makers at 723-5650, or on her cell at 237-3172. Please only call for emergencies where Father Don's assistance is required.

Father Don will update the parish on the status of Blessed Sacrament at this weekend's Masses. We hope to see you there.

Update: There will be no babysitting at the 9:30am Sunday Mass this week. The room that is used is in no condition to house children.

Tonight's Cantor Rehersal is Cancelled

Posted by: tony on 06/29/2006 02:16 PM (Read: )
Due to flooding conditions in the church, the cantor rehersal for June 29, 2006 is canceled. Let me take this opportunity to say that during the summer months, cantor rehersal will continue every Thursday at 7:00pm lasting an hour to an hour and a half. If you feel drawn to this particular ministry, please contact Barb Innes at the rectory at 797-5151.

Rehersal for the full choir will resume in September. Can you sing "Mary Had a Little Lamb"? Being able to read music is not a requirement, only a desire to praise God in song. If you are interested, you can also contact Barb Innes at the rectory phone number for more information.
